Submissions

Sport BJJ has its place but submissions are what you should always be on the look out for.

Possibly through a lac of instructor and / or being adviced not to worry about submissions I really let my BJJ down by not having several attacks from the different positions.

You need to know how to submit a person.

What do I mean by that – you need to know how to apply an armbar, choke, shoulder lock, wrist lock, ankle hold…. etc… Basically I’m talking about all of the above – I realised that its difficult to get good at all submissions all at once but it is quite easy to get good at one type of submission from a variety of angles.

For instance I eventually decided to focus on chokes. You first have to understnad the mechanics of a choke – the fulcrum – the leverage etc.. Once you understand how to apply it you need to ensure you know the detail that gives you a higher percentage. I used to hate getting to a good position and having to give up applying the submissions because I didn’t know the detail.

The satisfaction of getting the tap is immense but be careful you don’t want to hurt others or yourself – learn to tap once the submission is on and you can’t escape – if applying the submission learn to get to a no escape position / submission point and hold. Of course in a real fight you’d yang to ensure you cause pain and finish the fight but at the gym we’re just training !!

PS.Setting up a little weekend class for my little one – hoping he can use it to protect himself against a hillbilly or two !
